"Long ago when this one was only a sprite [ie 'pup'], it was given a dark mask which felt too heavy. It was made of stone of which was collected near the fire god's dwelling, however the Hoshibuki did not know this and was told to always wear it for protection and good blessing. One night during a festival, the Hoshibuki stumbled over another tail and its mask fell to the earth! Shattered, it seemingly suctioned back together except for one piece which someone took (maybe they caused this too). Ever since because the mask will never be complete, the imp is cursed forever—its tail burns bright and fire oozes out of the hole, and it hurts to take the mask off...but it can happen, just be careful...you never know who is watching. "
